Jewish, Queer, and Disabled: Intersections in American Jewish Life

Join the Centers for Student Access, Community, and Intercultural Engagement for this lunch and learn during Jewish American Heritage Month. We’ll learn about some fabulous people who have contributed to queer and disabled Jewish cultural life in the United States, discuss resources at the intersections of being Jewish, disabled, and queer, and think about how Jewish, disabled, and queer cultures embrace liminalities of various kinds. Lunch provided!
Dissent and Community: Rabbi Judah Magnes in the Judaica Collection in Western Libraries Special Collections

When Judah Magnes came to New York from the west coast in the early twentieth century, he found a Jewish community that was deeply divided and embroiled in grinding labor disputes. Special Collections manager David Schlitt will discuss Magnes’s role as a communal leader and mediator during the time historian Morris Schappes refers to “the heroic period of Jewish labor,” and share related materials from the Judaica collection at Western Libraries Special Collections.
