La Bienvenida

Every year, La Plaza proudly hosts La Bienvenida, an event designed to welcome and celebrate incoming Latine students and their families as they embark on their journey at Western Washington University. Held at the start of each academic year, La Bienvenida provides a space for incoming freshmen and transfer students to connect with the vibrant Latine community on campus.

This event is a joyful celebration of culture and community, featuring music, food, and speakers that reflect the rich diversity of Latine heritage. Students and their families have the opportunity to meet with current Latine student leaders, faculty, and staff, and to learn about the resources available to support their success at WWU.

La Bienvenida is more than just a welcome—it’s the beginning of a lasting relationship between students and La Plaza, a space where they will find mentorship, guidance, and a sense of belonging throughout their time at Western.

Whether you're new to campus or returning to reconnect, La Bienvenida is a cherished tradition that reflects La Plaza’s commitment to fostering community and supporting Latine student success. Dia de los Muertos 

Join us in celebration of Día de los Muertos on Friday, November 1, from 4:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Syre Auditorium, Whatcom Community College! This traditional Mexican holiday, also known as the Day of the Dead, is an opportunity to honor and remember loved ones who have passed. The evening will be filled with live music, delicious food, Danza Azteca performance, and more. All are welcome to attend and learn more about the cultural traditions surrounding this important holiday.

Jotería Lotería: Celebrating LGBTQ+ Latine Identities

Each year, La Plaza and LGBTQ+ Western host Jotería Lotería, a vibrant event celebrating LGBTQ+ identities within the Latine community. Inspired by the traditional Mexican game of Lotería, this reimagined version centers and uplifts Mexico’s queer community, blending culture, fun, and inclusivity. The event features lively rounds of the game with LGBTQ+ themed cards and performances by queer Latine artists, including past appearances by renowned Latine Drag Queens. With delicious food like tamales, rice, beans, and beverages, Jotería Lotería is a space for joy, empowerment, and community, honoring the intersection of Latine and LGBTQ+ identities. Join us each year to celebrate and support one another in the vibrant communities at WWU. 

La Plaza Celebration of Graduates

This year, La Plaza will host the inaugural La Plaza Graduation Ceremony, open to all graduating students. While we will celebrate and center the Latine student experience, this event is for everyone who wishes to take part in this special occasion. The ceremony will be conducted in both English and Spanish to ensure accessibility for all attendees. Family, friends, and supporters will also be recognized for the important roles they have played in helping students achieve their goals. El Centro Estudiantil Latine La Plaza de Western Washington University está dedicado a honrar el legado de abogacía y resiliencia de los estudiantes latines de WWU, tanto del pasado como del presente, quienes han trabajado para la creación de espacios importantes en nuestro campus. Nuestra misión es cultivar un entorno inclusivo y de apoyo que empodere a los estudiantes latines para que prosperen académica, social y culturalmente. La Bienvenida 

Cada año, La Plaza se enorgullece de organizar La Bienvenida, un evento diseñado para darle la acogida y celebrar a los estudiantes latinos que ingresan a la universidad y a sus familias mientras inician su camino en la Universidad Estatal de Washington (Western Washington University). Celebrado al inicio de cada año académico, La Bienvenida ofrece un espacio para que los estudiantes de primer año y que se transfieren se conecten con la vibrante comunidad latina en el campus. 

Este evento es una celebración alegre de la cultura y la comunidad, con música, comida y ponentes que reflejan la rica diversidad de la herencia latina. Los estudiantes y sus familias tienen la oportunidad de conocer a los actuales líderes estudiantiles latinos, profesores y personal, y aprender sobre los recursos disponibles para apoyar su éxito en WWU. 

La Bienvenida es más que solo una bienvenida: es el comienzo de una relación duradera entre los estudiantes y La Plaza, un espacio donde encontrarán mentoría, orientación y un sentido de pertenencia durante su tiempo en Western.

Joteria Loteria: Celebrando Identidades LGBTQ+ Latines  

Cada año, La Plaza y LGBTQ+ Western organizan Jotería Lotería, un evento vibrante que celebra las identidades LGBTQ+ dentro de la comunidad latina. Inspirado en la tradicional Lotería mexicana, este juego reimaginado incluye cartas con temas LGBTQ+ y actuaciones de artistas latines queer, creando un espacio acogedor e inclusivo. Con deliciosa comida como tamales, arroz y frijoles, Jotería Lotería es más que una noche de juegos: es un espacio de cultura, orgullo, empoderamiento y comunidad. Únete a nosotros para celebrar y conectar con las comunidades latines y LGBTQ+ de WWU. 

Celebración de Graduados 

La ceremonia estará abierta para todos y se llevará a cabo en inglés y español para que todos puedan participar y entender.
